Maynooth is located between Kilcock and Leixlip on the R148 with the M4 skirting the town, being also connected to Dublin by train.
Situated in North County Kildare, 24 kilometres west of central Dublin, Maynooth is one of the five university towns in Ireland. The city houses Maynooth University, the nation's fastest-growing University and St Patrick's College, the country's main Roman Catholic seminary.
Being one of Ireland's five University Cities, Maynooth's Educational offer is vast with two 3rd level educational institutions. The St Patrick's College - a Pontifical University considered the "National Seminary for Ireland", and also Maynooth University. Both Institutions share campus space along with some of the facilities.

The longest established golf union in the world, The Golfing Union of Ireland, have their national headquarters here with a 22-acre teaching facility for up and coming golfers.
Nestled in the centre of more than 1.000 acres of Maynooth private parkland, the Carton House Golf Club offers amazing views, a great location and a top of the line golfing experience.
Maynooth's local rugby club North Kildare RFC, is located just 3 km from the city centre on the Kilcock road.
Resulting from a merger between Leixlip based Barnhall Rugby Club and Maynooth University, the MU Barnhall RFC also fields 28 teams, both male & female competing from U7 to Senior All-Ireland League.
Competing in the senior football championship in Kildare since 2009, Maynooth GAA is the local Gaelic Athletic Association club.
Although the local soccer club is called Maynooth Town F.C., their senior men's team competes in the Leinster Senior League as Maynooth University Town F.C. derived from the club co-operation with Maynooth University. The club was victorious in the FAI Intermediate Cup in 2018.
Moyglare Stud Farm, the thoroughbred horse racing and breeding operation is in Maynooth.
There is an Athletics club not far from Maynooth named Le Chéile Athletic Club.
